Montegrappa ZERO – the beginning of a new chapter in the modern evolution of writing with style

heading_title

The setting in which Italian fountain pen culture began is the picturesque, riverside town of Bassano del Grappa, at the foot of the Monte Grappa mountain in the Veneto region. It was there in 1912 that the Manifattura pennini d’oro e penne stilografiche (Manufacturing gold nibs and fountain pens) is founded, producing the first line of Italian fountain pens in 1915 and establishing a tradition of handcraft that has continued uninterrupted ever since.

This was during a transformative period for the industry, when fountain pens became portable thanks to built-in ink cartridges and became more sought after due to the boom in personal correspondence caused by World War I.

Italy quickly discovered the Elmo line of pens, named after the factory’s first technical director, Heinrich “Elmo” Helm, and among their first users was Ernest Hemingway, stationed near Bassano del Grappa as part of the American Red Cross.

In 1928, Elmo pens took on a new dimension thanks to the innovative use of celluloid, which would become a hallmark of the brand. They became more symbolic, more expressive, in a function of satisfying the emotional moment – a necessary component of the luxury product experience. With these writing instruments, which were the first to bear the Monte Grappa insignia, the magical link between paper and human thought was established, on which the legend of Montegrappa was built.

Here we will conclude this return to history, made to recall the credibility with which Montegrappa presents its ZERO collection as the beginning of a new chapter in the contemporary evolution of writing style.

When Montegrappa says with the ZERO collection: “Break with the past!”, it remains true to the tradition of constant innovation.

ZERO is the gateway to a new generation of writing instruments and brings together sartorial presence, precision engineering and uncompromising strength. In other words, the collection is designed in response to the toughest challenges of modern life, executed in materials and with mechanical features that never fail.

Inspired by luxury watches, the ZERO collection is reminiscent of prestigious “chronometers” in many ways. The innovative crown on the writing instruments of the collection features the Montegrappa logo behind a framed sapphire glass. The bronze alloy used for the details is the hypoallergenic, long-lasting and extremely durable Br8, popular among luxury watchmakers. The contrasts between the polished and brushed finishes of the ZERO instruments continue in the same vein.

The allusion to the aesthetics of high-end watches is not accidental. Montegrappa does not accept progress at the price of sacrificing the essence, the true values. The ZERO collection stays within Montegrappa’s philosophy of creating writing instruments to the taste of those who, while expressing themselves, want to enjoy the luxury of slowing down time. The ZERO therefore not only complements the creative transmission power of the hand but also fits the wrist of a person who wishes to be “eccentric”, not only as a connoisseur of luxury but also as a pen and analog watch user in the digital age.

The ZERO collection includes a fountain pen, rollerball, and ballpoint pen. You can choose between variants whose stainless steel parts are plated with palladium, ruthenium, or gold.
